Comfort Where Ductwork Can't Reach
Not every space in a home is easy to heat and cool. Additions, converted garages, ADUs and older homes built without ductwork often rely on window units or space heaters that are noisy and uneven. A ductless mini-split solves that by delivering heating and cooling directly to the room through a compact indoor unit connected to a small outdoor unit, with no ducts needed. Popsicle Air installs ductless systems throughout Orange County, including Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.
What a Ductless Mini-Split Is
A mini-split is a type of heat pump. An outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor units through a small line set that runs through a few-inch opening in the wall. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so every zone can be set to its own temperature.
Who Ductless Is For
Additions and remodels. Extending your existing ducts to a new room can be difficult. A mini-split serves the new space on its own.
ADUs and guest houses. A ductless system gives an accessory dwelling unit its own heating and cooling, with separate controls for the occupant.
Garages and workshops. Converted garages, home gyms and workshops can be comfortable year-round without tying into the main system.
Older homes without ducts. Many older homes, especially near the coast, were built with wall heaters or no central system at all. Ductless avoids tearing into walls and ceilings.
Problem rooms. A bonus room over the garage or a sunny bedroom that is always hotter than the rest of the house can get its own dedicated unit.
Indoor Unit Options
Wall-mounted heads. The most common choice: mounted high on a wall, simple to service and suited to most rooms.
Ceiling cassettes. Recessed into the ceiling for a cleaner look, where there is space above to fit the unit.
Concealed or low-profile units. In some homes, a small ducted unit can be hidden in a soffit or closet to serve one or two nearby rooms.
Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone
Single-zone. One outdoor unit paired with one indoor unit, ideal for a single room, ADU or garage.
Multi-zone. One outdoor unit serving several indoor units, so multiple rooms each get their own temperature control.
Mixing with central air. Some homes keep their central system for the main house and add a mini-split for a space it does not serve well. See heat pump installation for whole-home options.
Why Homeowners Choose Ductless
Quiet operation. Indoor units are designed to run quietly, which makes them popular for bedrooms and home offices.
No duct losses. Air goes straight into the room instead of traveling through ducts in a hot attic.
Zoned comfort. Heat or cool only the rooms you are using, set to the temperature each person prefers.
Minimal disruption. Installation typically requires only a small opening for the line set, with no ductwork to build.
What to Expect
Assessment. We measure the space, run a load calculation, check your electrical capacity and discuss where indoor and outdoor units should go, including any HOA guidelines.
Upfront price. You get a clear price before work begins, with our price-match guarantee.
Clean install. We mount units neatly, run and conceal line sets where practical, test the system and clean up.
Follow-up and maintenance. Mini-split filters and coils need regular cleaning. We can handle that through the Perfect Air Membership.
Ductless Mini-Split FAQ
How much does a ductless mini-split cost?
It depends on how many zones you need, the indoor unit styles and the installation details. We give you an upfront price after an assessment, and 0% financing is available, subject to credit approval.
Do mini-splits provide heat as well as cooling?
Yes. A mini-split is a heat pump, so it heats and cools, which suits Orange County's mild climate well.
How big is the hole in the wall?
The line set usually passes through a small opening of a few inches, which is sealed and finished after installation.
Can I put a mini-split in my ADU or garage?
Yes. These are among the most common places we install ductless systems.
Will my HOA allow an outdoor unit?
Many do with the right placement. We plan the outdoor unit location around your association's guidelines.
